The Annoyance School (Napier Anti-Rules)
1987-present
Mick Napier's anti-rules school — take care of yourself, strong individual choice over polite agreement, reject 'Yes, And' as doctrine.
Known for
- Annoyance Theatre opened 1987 as 'Metraform'; renamed 1989. Napier's *Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out* (2002) is the school's canonical text.
- Doesn't teach the Harold or traditional improv games — focuses on scenic work and individual performer POV.
- Directly opposes the Close/Halpern agreement orthodoxy: 'Yes, And' can produce polite, weak improv; strong individual choices support the ensemble better.
