Rejecting or contradicting a partner's offer — the primary failure mode that kills scenes.
Known for
- Spolin's foundational prohibition in Improvisation for the Theater: 'no denial.'
- Takes forms: direct contradiction ('No, we're not at the beach'), offer-wiping ('That never happened'), or softer 'Yes, but' patterns.
- Differs from conflict: two characters can disagree within a shared reality without either performer denying the scene's facts.
