Naturalistic Improv
2000s-present
Also known as Grounded Improv, Naturalism
A modern aesthetic that values believable, behavior-driven scenes played close to real life, in deliberate contrast to broad cartoon characters and bit work.
Known for
- A movement, not a single technique: it gathers grounded characters, organic discovery, emotional truth, and slow comedy under one preference for realism.
- Often taught explicitly as grounded work (for example dedicated 'grounded scene' intensives) that ask performers to drop the funny voice and just behave.
- Sits opposite the heightening-and-game school not as a rival but as a different center of gravity: behavior first, pattern second.
- Audience appeal is recognition rather than absurdity, which is why it travels well into the slow-comedy and two-person traditions.
