The Conductor (Playback)
The Playback Theatre facilitator — interviews the teller, casts the story, calls the form, and holds the container for the ensemble and audience.
Known for
- The conductor does not perform in the enactment — they frame it.
- Interview craft is central: conductors are trained to surface the emotional core of a story without dramatizing or leading the teller.
- Selects which short form the ensemble uses (Fluid Sculpture for a feeling, Story for a narrative, Pairs for ambivalence, etc.) — form choice is diagnostic, not decorative.
- Jonathan Fox modeled the role partly on the Greek chorus leader and partly on Moreno's psychodrama director.
