Pan Left / Pan Right
1980s-present (Johnstone)
Also known as Pan Right Pan Left, Camera Pan
4-8 players stand in an outward-facing circle; the two audience-facing players perform a scene. On 'Pan Right!' the circle rotates one spot and the new front pair starts a new scene. Returns to each scene continue them where they left off (time having passed).
Known for
- Invented by Keith Johnstone; staple of Theatresports competitions.
- Each pair gets a fresh suggestion; host can shift direction (pan left) after full rotation.
- Tests scene memory and time-jumping — returns are not pickups, they're jumps forward.
- Variant: 'Diamond' with exactly four players at the compass points.
