Tag-In Singing / Scene Painting into Song
A musical-improv technique where offstage performers tag in briefly to describe the environment or emotion, priming the MD and singer for the song's world.
Known for
- Origin: Scene Painting (a long-form opening technique) was adapted as a pre-song warm-up in musical improv.
- Performers step in one at a time, say one declarative sentence about the space, step out — stacks imagery before the singer has to commit.
- Gives the MD concrete hooks (a color, a weather, an object) to underscore before the lyric arrives.
