The keyboard player and musical anchor of an improvised musical, reads scenes, picks song styles, provides vamps, underscores, and tracks thematic callbacks.

- Most often a keyboardist; some ensembles (Baby Wants Candy) use a full band.

- Key MD skills: 13-style fluency (Laura Hall's list includes rock, country, gospel, Sondheim, ABBA, etc.), ear training, key-change memory, song-form pacing.
