The Hat Game
1970s-present ยท UK / Canada
Also known as Steal the Hat
Two players each wear a hat and try to snatch the other's hat while keeping their own on, all inside a justified scene rather than a naked grab.
Known for
- A Keith Johnstone exercise framed as a remedy for 'blind' actors who stop being present with their partner.
- Johnstone drilled the safe mechanics of reaching over a partner's head so the grab stays a game, not a fight.
- Players who hang back protecting their own hat miss the point; the lesson is engagement and presence over winning.
- Doubles as a live status battle: the hat becomes a physical stake the scene must keep justifying.
